Often called an urban village, Carnegie Hill offers residents a small town feeling in an anonymous city. This is a place where neighbors still welcome newcomers in person, residents gather at the holidays to light the tress along Park Avenue, and independent shopkeepers (including several small specialist bookstores) greet customers by name.

Named for Andrew Carnegie’s upper Fifth Avenue mansion, now home to the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, Carnegie Hill has an active neighborhood association and historic district designation that ensure its character remains intact. While most of its mansions have long since become museums or private schools, those who live in Carnegie Hill’s brownstones, condos, and co-ops can enjoy the neighborhood’s rich arts and culture scene with the Guggenheim Museum and the 92nd Street Y, among others, situated here. And when Central Park is your backyard, there are plenty of opportunities for outdoor recreation and relaxation as well.
